Set in a new world forged from a zombie outbreak, The Walking Dead presents every aspect of modern society in a flipped perspective.
The series follows a group of survivors as they learn to adapt to the new world that they live in. One of the things that I find interesting about this show is the way that buildings take on a completely different role.
Everything takes on a new architectural identity in The Walking Dead. The biggest example is that of a prison. At one point the group seeks refuge in a large prison, which becomes their home. It is interesting to see what we would consider as a place of hostility and a building designed to keep people inside become the complete opposite. In the show, the prison is a symbol of safety and protection which is used for keeping people and zombies out. This is a fascinating switch on how society can turn in the event of such an event.
Other examples include how houses become very unsafe, they are never a place of safety and comfort and the characters are always watching their backs and taking watch. A lot of what is now considered a dwelling is in the form of camps, which have become the new way of living in this post apocalypse world. Safety is never found by staying still, but instead by moving around and sheltering amongst nature.
I find this reversal of architectural understandings fascinating to see explored by the show and there are aspects of this show which can be applied to my film. For example the way that places of comfort have become the exact opposite would be applicable to my film by introducing the university as a place which is now dangerous.
